Lars Powell is Director of the Center for Risk and Insurance Research (CRIR) at the University of Alabama. CRIR identifies and solves risk and insurance problems with research and education. Dr. Powell has previously worked in both academic and industry roles.
Lars’ primary research interests include loss mitigation, insurer operations, insurer capitalization, insurance fraud, and the effects of regulation on insurance markets. His work appears in several journals including Accident Analysis and Prevention, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Financial Services Research, Journal of Law and Economics, Journal of Insurance Regulation, Journal of Risk and Insurance, Journal of Risk and Uncertainty, Natural Hazards Review, and Risk Management and Insurance Review. From 2010 to 2013, he served as editor of the Journal of Insurance Regulation.
Lars is a past President of the Risk Theory Society and the Southern Risk and Insurance Association. He serves on the boards of Smart Home America and the NAIC Center for Insurance Policy Research. He earned undergraduate degrees from the University of South Carolina, and a PhD in Risk Management and Insurance from the University of Georgia
